Description

Bryant and Mays Matchbox with black and white print containing a bundle of matches fits into a metal matchbox.

In the late 1800s matchboxes were usually made by women and families in their homes. Many of the matchboxes made for the Bryant and May factory in Bow were made in Hackney.

Some Hackney women took part in one of the most famous strikes by women workers in 1888 at the Bryant and May Factory.
