Description

This white apron was worn by a British Red Cross nurse and is marked with a red cross on the bib. The red cross logo was made a protected symbol under the 1949 Geneva Conventions. It is placed on medical and humanitarian vehicles as protection from military attack in conflict areas. It is a neutral symbol, with no religious or political significance. A reversal of the Swiss flag, the red cross symbol recognises the historic links between the original Geneva Convention in 1864 and Geneva, where the convention was held.
