Description

This is a portrait of the Reverend Meredith Townsend, who was pastor to the wealthy Abney family in Stoke Newington between 1752 and 1789. The Abneys were one of the many families attracted to the area by Hackney's tradition of religious tolerance. This object is part of the Chalmers Bequest. Ledger clerk Alexander Henry Chalmers bequeathed a collection of art to the London Borough of Stoke Newington (now part of Hackney) in 1927.
