Description

This image is by Hackney photographer Dennis Morris. Morris started recording his life in Hackney at the age of 8, capturing the everyday experience of the Black British community in 1960s and 1970s London. Morris later came celebrated for his photos of Bob Marley, the Sex Pistols and Marianne Faithful.

This image shows two men on Sandringham Road in Hackney having a conversation while one man sits in the boot of a car. It was taken at a time when the police were using the stop and search laws, with which officers could act on suspicion of intent to commit a crime. However, the police did not realise that West Indians liked to congregate in the street to chat, and their presence was often perceived as loitering.
