Description

This medal was issued to mark the abolition of slavery on 1 August 1834. One side of the medal shows a freed man standing in a field of crops with arms raised, holding broken manacles in his hands. He is standing on a broken whip. Verse 23 of psalm 118 is written on the outer edge of the coin: 'This is the Lord's doing; It is marvellous in our eyes’. The reverse reads 'In Commemoration of the Extinction of Colonial Slavery throughout the British Dominions in the reign of William the II, Aug 1st 1834'. There is a small hole piercing the medal which enabled it to be worn around the neck.
