Description

Model of a knacker's cart taking a dead horse to the yard of George Phillips, 'licensed horse slaughterer to Her Majesty'. Horse drawn knacker's carts were commonplace in London until the mid 20th century, when motorised vehicles gradually took their place. The bones, fat and meat of animals were processed and sold on by the knackerman. The meat produced was not fit for humans to eat, so was sold on instead as animal feed. Although it was sometimes a grim job transporting dead animals, the knackerman could make a good living. The man driving this cart is well dressed, wearing a three-piece suit with pocket fob-watch and smoking a cigar.
