Description

Fragment of Roman container, possibly a bowl or dish.

It is made from a type of glossy red tableware known as Samian ware, a pottery primarily used for displaying and serving food. The majority was made in France and Germany and brought to Britain.

This fragment is richly decorated with moulded scene of a lion hunting a deer. This would have been made by impressing individual stamps into the clay after the vessel had been shaped on a potter’s wheel.
