Description

Fragment of Roman cup with flat base, found at Springfield in 1814. Undecorated.

It is made from a type of glossy red tableware known as Samian ware, a pottery primarily used for displaying and serving food. The majority was made in France and Germany and brought to Britain.

Small samian “cups” probably would have been used to serve condiments and snacks rather than been used as drinking vessels.
